Het Porfier: Smart Urban Development in Ghent’s 20th-Century Belt
Future-proof project development with a nod to the past
The name 'Het Porfier' refers to the porphyry cobblestones that were salvaged from the original driveway and reused in the new residential area. This integration of historical elements underscores MIIX’s respectful approach to the site’s past. At the same time, this project addresses the housing needs of tomorrow. Here are some of its key features:Sustainable energy supply: The project uses a borehole energy storage (BES) system for heating and cooling, contributing to a fossil-fuel-free energy supply.
Car-free courtyard: all houses and apartments are arranged around a central, car-free courtyard. This serves as a social gathering place and echoes the historic driveway of the original villa.
Preserving existing green spaces: a historic park garden overlooking a protected nature reserve, situated between a community garden and the city’s green outskirts.
Diversity in housing options: the project features a mix of bright homes and apartments with 1 to 3 bedrooms, each with spacious terraces or gardens.
Supporting amenities: in addition to residential units, space has been set aside for an office or practice space, which helps bring vitality to the neighborhood.
Bicycle facilities: A prominent, lockable bicycle parking area on the ground floor of the building encourages the use of bicycles as the primary mode of transportation.
